How do I vote for chair?
Chances are that elections for chair of the Berkeley County Republican Party are unlike any other election you’ve voted in before. This FAQ is here to help first-time voters, newcomers to the process, and veteran party members who need a hand addressing voting concerns.
Frequently Asked Questions About Voting:
How is the Chair of the Berkeley County GOP Elected?
The chair of the Berkeley County GOP (BCGOP) is elected every two years by Delegates at the party's County Convention. This takes place at a Convention in the spring following each even-year general election, and this year that Convention is in April 2025. A candidate for chair needs to receive a majority (over 50%) of all of the votes cast by members of the Convention. In elections with multiple candidates, sometimes multiple rounds of runoff voting will be required before a candidate will receive the magic number of votes to win.
In a runoff voting system, the candidate with the fewest votes in the first round of voting will be eliminated from the ballot and another round of voting will start without that candidate. If a candidate receives over 50% of the votes on the second round, they'll win, and if not, the process repeats until a candidate gets a majority.
How do I Become A Delegate to the County Convention?
At precinct reorganization, Republican Party members are selected as delegates to the county convention through a process that typically involves local precinct meetings. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how it generally works:

1. Precinct Reorganization Meeting: Each precinct holds a reorganization meeting, which is open to all registered voters in the precinct. During these meetings, members elect precinct officers and may also nominate and elect delegates to represent their precinct at the county convention.
The Berkeley County Reorganization will take place March 2027.

2. Delegate Nomination: Party members who wish to serve as delegates may either be nominated by others or self-nominate at the precinct meeting. In some cases, a vote may be held to select delegates if multiple people are nominated. Each precinct will have an allocated number of delegate positions based on the previous year's Republican Primary turnout.

3. Delegate Election: The precinct members then vote on who will be their delegates to the county convention. The number of delegates a precinct is allotted may vary depending on its size and the number of registered Republicans in that precinct.

4. Delegate Certification: Once elected, delegates are officially certified as representatives of their precinct to attend the county convention. These delegates will then participate in party business at the county level, including electing county officers and voting on resolutions.

Overall, the process is designed to ensure that each precinct has representation at the county convention and that the selection of delegates reflects the will of the local Republican Party members.
